First Peek at Viking Mississippi River Ship Design Plans
In case you didn’t know, Viking – of Viking Cruises fame – recently announced the debut of their first Mississippi river cruise ship, Viking Mississippi. The year 2022 sounds like a long way off right now, so to satisfy everyone’s curiosity, here’s a preview of what to expect when Viking Mississippi is a reality.
Viking Mississippi River Ship Debut is Getting Closer
When the new made-in-the-USA river ship is launched in 2022, the majority of the cruise itineraries will be seven-night cruises from New Orleans. Most cruises will be round-trip from the Big Easy. Several one-way north or southbound cruises on the lower Mississippi are offered. A very few special, full-length Mississippi river cruises are planned.
Some features included on Viking’s new ship
- Free Wi-Fi when available
- Self-service launderettes and laundry service
- 42″ flat-screen, interactive LCD TV with intuitive remote & complimentary Movies On Demand
- Elevators conveniently located throughout the ship
- Infinity plunge pool

As you scroll through these photos, if you’ve ever taken a Viking river or Viking ocean cruise, you’ll see some familiar spaces.
It gets pretty darn humid in late summer on the lower Mississippi. This pool and terrace will be a welcome retreat, especially in July and August.
One of my favorite spots on Viking’s ocean ships is Mamsen’s for authentic Norwegian food.
And again, Viking has brought their success from their ocean ships to the Mississippi River.
Viking Mississippi Verandah and French Balcony staterooms
In total, there will be 193 all outside staterooms. Of these, 128 are Veranda & Deluxe Veranda Staterooms, eight staterooms have French Balconies, 24 Penthouse Veranda Staterooms, 16 Penthouse Junior Suites, seven Terrace Suites and 10 sprawling Explorer Suites.
Reservations are open at Viking, and some of the sailings are already sold out. More news about this new ship as soon as we hear about it.
