Cruise Maven News: Carnival Plans New Cruise Destination

An agreement was just signed between Carnival Cruise Line and the Bahamian government to develop a large-scale cruise port project on Grand Bahama Island.

Of course, this project is subject to a detailed public discussion process, environmental studies and permitting.

The as-yet-unnamed cruise port facility will be funded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line and will be the largest purpose-built cruise facility ever constructed in The Bahamas.

Among the features are a one-mile stretch of beach, food, beverage and shopping outlets, water-based sports and equipment plus more recreational facilities. The port’s pier will be able to accommodate two of Carnival’s largest cruise ships at the same time. The new project is expected to eventually host up to 1 million guests annually.

Carnival Cruise Line is the leader in year-round cruising to The Bahamas and this new development will not only provide a truly extraordinary and one-of-a-kind destination experience for our guests but it will further solidify our partnership with the people of The Bahamas,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

So far, the only thing a cruise visitor can do when their ship docks in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island is visit the colorful Port Lucaya Marketplace, hop into a taxi or purchase a beach day shore excursion across the island or visit the Grand Lucayan Resort and purchase a day pass.

This new cruise center complex will be a terrific alternative to having to plan another shore day. You’ll simply be able to walk from your ship to the beach. Stay tuned as more details are approved and rendering released.
