Jamaica Ports Reopen Following Hurricane Beryl, Cozumel Port Temporarily Closed
The Port Authority of Jamaica has confirmed that all three cruise ports in Montego Bay, Falmouth, and Ocho Rios have reopened after Hurricane Beryl brushed the island’s southern coast on July 3. Ships can now enter the harbors and prepare for operations, allowing scheduled visits for tourists to enjoy the vibrant culture of Jamaica. Cruise itineraries for the summer are not as busy as the winter months, when more ships visit the island.
Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 storm, impacted Jamaica with strong winds causing power outages, property destruction, and flooding. Despite not making official landfall on the island, the storm had fatal consequences. Now, it has weakened to a Category 2 storm and made landfall in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, affecting port traffic in Cozumel.
Cruise lines have altered itineraries to avoid Cozumel, and passengers are advised to remain flexible during hurricane season. Safety is a priority for cruise lines, and changes to schedules can occur unexpectedly. Travelers should be prepared for unexpected changes to their plans during this season, which lasts from June 1 to November 30.
