With their sights set on a return to cruising later this summer, Norwegian Cruise Line has detailed their new health and safety protocols. The cruise line’s new health and safety measures, called Sail Safe, were developed following CDC guidelines.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s Six-Part Health and Safety Program Details
In an effort to explain the health and safety protocols that will be implemented, Norwegian has outlined their Sail Safe program into six categories. Even when the new program is in place, the cruise line stated that more precautionary measures will be added as new information and technology is comes to light.
Here are their fleet-wide safety measures that are being implemented now.
All New Air Filtration – Medical-grade HEPA air-filters that remove 99.95% of airborne pathogens. These are one of the highest grades of particulate air filters and will replace all existing filters.
Increased Screening Protocols – Before embarking, all passengers will undergo a health screening. These health checks will be touchless temperature screenings and those who appear at risk will be required to complete additional screening.
Temperature checks will be mandatory:
Before embarkation
When returning to the ship after a day in port
At the entrance to dining venues
Before all activities in public venues
Prior to departing the ship at the end of the cruise
Crew will also be monitored with temperature checks throughout the day. Before a crew member is hired, they will have to take a pre-employment medical exam as well as the availability to test crew for COVID-19.
3. Increased Sanitation
All ships will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before every cruise. Embarkation terminals will be continuously sanitized and if possible, fogged between embarkation and debarkation.
Staterooms and public areas will be cleaned to a higher measure as well as using electrostatic spray technology.
As for buffets, they will be in full service with crew doing the servicing to guests. Hand sanitizer will be readily available at the entrances to dining venues.
4. Social Distancing
Reduced passenger capacity will allow for greater social distancing space. Embarkation will be staggered and online check-in expanded. Access to public areas aboard ships will also be monitored.
5. Ship Medical Facilities and Resources
Ships’ medical centers will be upgraded to include isolation rooms. Testing kits for COVID-19 will be the kits with on-site rapid results as well as oxygen equipment and medication to treat any COVID-19 cases. Every ship will have a Public Health Officer who will be responsible for sanitation procedures and outbreak prevention measures.
6. Port Experiences and Safety
Norwegian will work with port authorities and tour operators to follow health and sanitation procedures. The cruise line states that they will only call at ports that are deemed safe and keep guests informed of any last-minute itinerary changes.
Norwegian Cruise Line stresses that these current protocols are in the process of being implemented. Any new health and safety measures and technology enhancements would be rolled out as the Sail Safe program evolves.
